Life-Science Foundation
A non-profit foundation
Ascenion is a 100% subsidiary of the Life-Science Foundation for the Promotion of Science and Research. The foundation funds research projects that address the needs of science, society and the economy and that serve to protect human life and the environment. The foundation was set up in 2001 by the life science institutes of the Helmholtz Association, which were subsequently joined by the first Leibniz Association institutes in 2004 and 2009. With the exception of the DKFZ Ascenion is responsible for the commercialisation of all intellectual property arising from the Foundation’s research institutes.
Funds for research
Proceeds from licensing and cooperation agreements are forwarded by Ascenion directly to the respective research institutes. Proceeds from the sale of Ascenion’s equity in spin-off companies are paid tax free to the Foundation, which distributes the funds to appropriate research projects.
