Research Institutions

Partner to leading life-science institutes

Ascenion currently works with 15 life-science institutes in the Helmholtz and Leibniz Associations and one Medical School.

Helmholtz Association:

Research projects relating to the health of man in the environment in order to identify health risks posed by environmental factors, to elucidate mechanisms of disease development, and to develop concepts for the long-term protection of human health and the natural basis of life

HZI - Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research

Infection research with a primary focus on pathogens which are either medically relevant or which can be used as models for researching the mechanisms of infection

MDC - Max Delbrück Centre for Molecular Medicine

Research into the role of genes and gene products (proteins) to better understand, treat or prevent severe diseases, in particular cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, cancer as well as function and dysfunction of the nervous system

Leibniz Association:

The ATB's task is to create process-engineering bases for sustainable land-use management and to provide innovative technical solutions for industry.   By combining scientific and engineering findings, especially in the field of new technologies such as biotechnology and information technology

BNI - Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine

Research into tropical illnesses, diagnosis and treatment of patients affected, and vocational training of doctors in the field of tropical medicine

DIfE - German Institute of Human Nutrition

Research into the relation between nutrition and health from the molecular basis to clinical applications

 DPZ - German Primate Centre

Biological and biomedical research with and on primates as well as services for other research institutions in this field

DRFZ - German Rheumatism Research Center Berlin

Interdisciplinary research center devoted to the research of rheumatic diseases. One of the leading international institutes in the field of immunology, experimental rheumatology and epidemiology

FLI - Leibniz Institute for Age Research – Fritz Lipmann Institute

Research into the molecular mechanisms of age-associated diseases and of the process of ageing; specific topics include the identification of genes involved in the regulation of organismic life span, the analysis of DNA repair deficiencies or of so-called protein unfolding diseases (Parkinson, Alzheimer)

FMP - Leibniz Institute for Molecular Pharmacology

Research projects related to the initial stages of drug research with a particular focus on clarifying structure, function and protein-ligand interaction as well as identifying small molecules that bind to corresponding proteins and thereby trigger biological activity

FZB - Research Center Borstel - Leibniz-Center for Medicine and Biosciences

Health and biomedical research in pneumology (diseases relating to the lung or brochia); the current focus is on infection biology, allergology, tumor biology and chronic inflammations the causes of which are not yet fully understood

HKI - Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology - Hans-Knoell-Institute

Identification and investigation of natural products produced by microorganisms, mainly fungi, to understand their role as mediators of biological communication, to use them for the elucidation of cellular processes and to develop novel natural product-based antibiotics mainly directed against pathogenic fungi

HPI - Heinrich Pette Institute for Experimental Virology

Research into the biology of human viruses, the pathogenesis of viral diseases as well as the immune reactions of organisms and correlated problems

IPK - Leibniz Institute for Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research

Basic and applied research in the area of plant genetics and crop plant research; major areas of application include farming, plant breeding, food and feed technology as well as the use of renewable raw materials

IFN - Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology

The Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology (IfN) is dedicated to the study of the mechanisms of learning and memory

Medical Schools

 MHH - Hanover Medical School

Healthcare provision and research into new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches with a particular focus on transplantation medicine, cochlear implants and infection research

Further life-science institutes

TWINCORE- Centre for Experimental and Clinical Infection Research

The Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) and the Medical School Hanover (MHH) have established the Twincore Centre where researchers and clinicians will closely work together in the areas of basic and clinical infection research.
