MOAC: Specific Marker for Streptococcus anginosus/Streptococcus constellatus

Referenznummer TO 02-00258

The Challenge

Routine microbiologic diagnosis of streptococcal infections is mostly restricted to the determination of the type of hemolysis and of the Lancefield group. Usually, identification of streptococci down to the species level is not carried out. This leaves a considerable risk for misidentification of causative pathogens which can lead to an inappropriate treatment of the infection and thus may lead to the development of life- threatening diseases.

Technology

The present invention relates to a protein specific for Streptococcus anginosus and Streptococcus constellatus. The specific nucleic acid and related polypeptide sequences are suitable markers for detecting Streptococcus strains of the anginosus group, preferably for detecting Streptococcus anginosus and/or Streptococcus constellatus and to discriminate them from other streptococci. The respective marker sequences can serve as molecular basis for fast, easy and cost-efficient assays for diagnosis and/or prognosis of infections with Streptococcus anginosus and/or Streptococcus constellatus and provide a useful tool to identify the optimal therapy for patients with streptococcal infections.

Commercial Opportunity

The technology is offered for co-development of a diagnostic assay or in-licensing.

Developmental Status

A PCR-based diagnostic assay has been developed.

Patent Situation

International patent application pending (WO2009/1153046).
