m4 Award for ‘KNOWING’, a project from the Helmholtz Zentrum München

From 40 submitted projects – all excellent, according to the jury – five have now emerged as winners. These were chosen as having the potential to lead to start-ups in the area of personalized medicine. Among the winners is ‘KNOWING - Turning Big Data into Personalized Therapies’, the brain child of Dr Nikola Müller and her team at the Institute of Computational Biology at the Helmholtz Zentrum München. They are developing software that compiles and analyses very large and heterogeneous quantities of data from several different projects – for example data from genome, metabolic and tissue studies. This allows relationships to be revealed and potentially innovative biomarkers or active agents to be recognized.

The EUR 0.5 million prizemoney should allow the team to develop the software up to the launch of a start-up and obtaining seed financing. The scientists were, and will continue to be, supported by the Innovation Department at the Helmholtz Zentrum München together with Ascenion, for example through practical help with the application and the development of a convincing pitch.
