Helmholtz Association

The research centres that make up the Helmholtz Association have been commissioned with long-term research goals to preserve and improve the foundations of human life. With more than 38,000 employees in 18 research centres, the Helmholtz Association is the biggest scientific organization in Germany. 

In 2001, leading life-science institutes in the Helmholtz Association initiated the establishment of the LifeScience Foundation, and have since worked closely with Ascenion. Ascenion collaborates with these institutes in the association:

DZNE – German Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases
Research into the causes and risk factors in neurodegenerative disease and development of new therapeutic and healthcare strategies 

Helmholtz Zentrum München – Research Center for Environmental Health
Research into chronic diseases arising from the interaction of environmental factors and individual genetic disposition

HZDR – Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf
Research in the fields of health energy and matter

HZI – Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research 
Infection research with a primary focus on pathogens which are either medically relevant or which can be used as models for researching the mechanisms of infection

MDC – Max Delbrück Centre for Molecular Medicine
Research in the fields of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, cancer, and function and dysfunction of the nervous system
