ELISA for the detection of chikungunya virus

The chikungunya virus is transmitted by mosquitos and was originally found predominantly in Africa and Asia. It is currently spreading fast in the humid tropics of South America. It causes an infectious disease characterized by fever and joint pain. Antibodies in human serum and plasma can be detected using the ELISA technique.
The test is designed for the qualitative determination of antibodies to chikungunya virus and to rule out other tropical infections with a similar disease course.

Origin: Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine

The diagnostic test was developed by research teams at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine and the German Federal Armed Forces. With Ascenion’s help, it was licensed out in 2009 to NovaTec Immundiagnostica GmbH, a company specialized in the development and manufacture of ELISA diagnostic kits for the diagnosis of infectious diseases.
