5th BioVaria: Strong Support from the Pharmaceutical Industry

23 May 2012, Munich – Thirteen European technology transfer organizations and a guest partner from Canada were the joint organizers of BioVaria, which took place last week in Munich for the fifth year running. The feedback from organizers and participants alike was extremely positive: in the five years since Ascenion launched BioVaria, the conference has become a leading marketplace for life-science inventions from European public research institutes and universities.

This year, 46 institutes from nine countries presented numerous licensable projects, in particular new approaches to the treatment of cancer, inflammation and cardiovascular and autoimmune disease.

The event met with a lively response from the biopharmaceutical industry, and both the presentations and the exhibition area were well attended. A total of 140 delegates from research, industry and technology transfer enjoyed animated discussions on project details and cooperation opportunities.

“I have experienced BioVaria 2012 as a valuable forum where selected projects from academia are presented to potential partners for commercialization. The opportunity to network in this framework was much appreciated,” Dr Thomas Hanke, Sourcing Director at Novo Nordisk, commented.

The number of participants from industry has been climbing steadily since the first BioVaria in 2007, and there are now an impressive number of major players among the sponsors.

“This shows that by pulling together technology offers across organizational, regional and national boundaries, we are successfully reaching our target group of potential licensees from industry,” said Dr Christian Stein, CEO of Ascenion. “BioVaria therefore makes an important contribution to our common goal: using the results of publicly funded research for the benefit of all.”

The next BioVaria will take place on 4 June 2013.
