Dualis Medtech GmbH, a spin-out from the German Aerospace Center, and ReliantHeart, Inc. will work together to implement a wireless energy transfer system for ReliantHeart’s HeartAssist5® ventricular assist device. The resulting system is intended for critically ill heart patients, whose heart can no longer pump enough blood to sustain the body. The combination of HeartAssist5®, a highly energy-efficient mechanical pump, with Dualis’ MedBase® wireless technology, could significantly improve their quality of life. It enables patients to move freely without the risk of infections, because there is no transcutaneous wire. The partners expect to make the new system available in 2016.
‘The alliance highlights the potential of Dualis’ wireless energy transfer technology,’ says Dr Anja Zimmermann, responsible for equity management and valuation at Ascenion. ‘The team’s performance and the progress of their projects are extremely remarkable – in the field of heart diseases and beyond.’ More recent projects include the transfer of the wireless approach to other indications such as urinary incontinence.
