Ascenion’s portfolio company Lucid Genomics attracts EUR 1.3 million pre-seed funding

The spin-off from the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics and the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin raised EUR 1.3 million to further advance its AI-Digital HealthTech platform.

Lead investor is Caesar Ventures, and co-investors include BIF Partners, another.vc and the MPF Accelerator.

Lucid Genomic’s platform builds on research by Martin Vingron, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics, and Stefan Mundlos, Director of the Institute of Medical Genetics and Human Genetics at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and group leader at the Max Planck Institute. It merges cutting-edge sequencing technology and advanced AI with a deep understanding of the ‘dark genome’, which comprises the 98% non-coding parts of the human genome and has long been neglected in genetic analyses.

Unlike other approaches, Lucid Genomic’s platform allows the identification of genetic patterns or variants in the entire human genome. This holds immense potential for the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry in many applications such as precision medicine, gene editing, and pharmacogenomics. Using the proceeds from this financing round, Lucid Genomics will further develop and expand its platform. The initial focus will be on rare genetic diseases, followed by cancer diagnostics and other related sectors.

The start-up has been coached by Max Planck Innovation in the context of MAX!mize, the Max Planck Society’s start-up incubation programme. An exclusive licence between Lucid Genomics and the originating institutes was agreed with joint support from Max Planck Innovation, Charité BIH Innovation and Ascenion, the Charité’s technology transfer partner.
