Ascenion’s portfolio company MyoPax receives first B# Plus funding

MyoPax is the first start-up to receive funding from IBB Ventures’ new B# Plus component. The investment will advance the development of MyoPax’s stem cell and gene therapy platform and prepare its first development candidate for clinical testing.

MyoPax is a Berlin-based biotech company spun off from Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association. It is being built up by its founders Prof. Dr Simone Spuler, Dr Verena Schöwel-Wolf and Dr Diane Seimetz. The start-up is developing new therapeutic approaches for genetic muscle-wasting diseases that are currently incurable. Its platform combines regenerative muscle stem cell therapies with precise gene repair, using CRISPR/Cas technology to correct disease-causing mutations in a targeted way.

The B# Plus funding complements MyoPax’s support from the European Union’s European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator programme. It will mainly be used to further develop the manufacturing process for pharmaceutical production. The aim is to lay the groundwork for the first clinical trial of the therapeutic approach while expanding the technology platform.

B# Plus extends B#, the Berlin pre-seed fund, and specifically targets deep-tech founding teams with at least one female founder. Managed by IBB Ventures, the fund invests a total of EUR 11 million and is financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) programme STEP.

As technology transfer partner to Charité and the Max Delbrück Center, Ascenion has supported the project from the outset, assisting the partner institutes with licence negotiations and the spin-off process.
