Ascenion’s portfolio company iThera Medical receives a EUR 2.5 million grant plus up to EUR 15 million in equity under the EIC Accelerator programme

The company will use the proceeds to advance its groundbreaking optoacoustic imaging technology into clinical practice. If successful, it would provide a superior, non-invasive alternative to established diagnostic procedures in many diseases.

iThera’s MSOT technology (multispectral optoacoustic tomography) has the unique capability of visualizing optical contrast at high resolution in deep tissue and displaying the image in real time. It is already in use for preclinical and clinical research around the globe and is currently being developed for diagnostic applications. First data support its potential to improve the diagnosis and treatment monitoring of inflammatory diseases, fibrosis, and cancer.

The project that has now been awarded funding under the EIC Accelerator programme encompasses three major objectives: MSOT system optimization, achieving broad clinical validation and regulatory approval for the new platform, and developing a robust market access strategy in cooperation with national and regional policymakers. Project kick-off is planned for the beginning of 2022.

The EIC Accelerator programme is Europe’s largest and most selective public funding programme for SMEs that develop breakthrough innovations with high growth potential.
