Scientists from the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) and the Max Planck Research Unit for Enzymology and Protein Folding have developed a new approach to the treatment of multiple sclerosis. By chemically linking two approved pharmaceuticals – members of the cyclosporin und FK506 (tacrolimus) series – they have created a new class of substance that protects nerve cells with greater efficacy and with fewer side effects compared with each of the two components alone. A patent application has now been submitted for this new class of substance, laying the foundation for the further development and commercialization of this innovative approach. The application process has been supported by the technology transfer partners of the two institutes: Ascenion and Max Planck Innovation.
