Traditional hospital information systems (HIS) are the backbone of clinical processes. They are fed with data by medical staff, but this data is often only available to individual departments and therefore cannot be used to its full extent to improve patient care.
To avoid such data silos, Andrea Kreichgauer and Jasper Mecklenburg founded dotbase, a spin-off from the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité (BIH) and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. On the dotbase platform, data from different sources is brought together in a structured way for the first time, making it usable for individualized treatments. Clinical staff can adapt workflows to specialty-specific processes in just a few days and without any programming knowledge. The platform also covers the administrative and economic requirements of everyday clinical practice and makes care data available for research and quality assurance in the long term. The result is a dynamic, learning system that improves the quality of treatment and noticeably reduces the workload in everyday clinical practice.
Several departments at Charité are already using dotbase successfully. The platform is expected to be used hospital-wide by the end of 2025. At the same time, it will be rolled out at other German university hospitals.
dotbase was funded by the BIH Digital Health Accelerator programme. Ascenion supported its partner institution Charité in the licensing negotiations and the start-up process.
