The PreFree system is an AI-based clinical decision support tool that enables early detection of individual risks for pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is among the most common and dangerous pregnancy complications, responsible for the deaths of approximately 76,000 women and 500,000 unborn children globally each year. PreFree supports clinicians in making more accurate treatment and hospitalization decisions, helping to prevent misdiagnoses and unnecessary hospital admissions, improve care quality, and lower healthcare costs. The technology also comprises remote monitoring of pregnant patients.
A clinical trial is currently in preparation to evaluate the impact of PreFree on medical care pathways. Two major national health insurance providers are supporting the project, which is an important step toward evidence-based integration into standard care. Market launch in Germany is planned for the fourth quarter of 2025.
PreFree was initiated by Prof. Dr Stefan Verlohren, formerly at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and now at the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), and was funded by and developed within the BIH Digital Health Accelerator programme. The licensing process was supported by Ascenion, Charité’s technology transfer partner.
